Endovenous laser therapy, also known as EVLT is an innovative method for eliminating unsightly and often painful varicose veins. The procedure uses laser energy to heat the affected vein, causing the vein walls to seal together so the vein closes. Surrounding vessels, tissue and skin are left untouched by the laser. Blood is rerouted to healthy veins nearby and the treated vein is eliminated through natural body processes.
A narrow fiber is inserted directly into the affected vein to administer laser energy. The fiber requires a tiny incision that typically requires no suturing afterward. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis at Northwest Vascular & Vein using topical numbing cream or local anesthesia.
The entire procedure takes less than one hour to complete. Most patients are able to return to work and regular activities immediately after the procedure, although some wait until the next day to resume activities. Some patients do experience mild discomfort and swelling after EVLT, which is easily managed with oral pain medication.
You will see the results of your EVLT procedure right away, but those results will continue to improve over time. Any symptoms you were experiencing with your varicose veins will be immediately relieved. Since veins are effectively eliminated, the procedure is considered permanent. However, it is possible additional varicose veins will form in the area over time, requiring additional treatment.
EVLT is a minimally-invasive, effective way for eliminating varicose and spider veins. We offer this procedure at Northwest Vascular & Vein, along with other options that allow us to customize treatment to a patient’s specific needs and desired outcome.
