Varicose veins deeper under the surface of the skin can now be treated with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, eliminating the need for painful surgery. This procedure uses a foam solution that more effectively displaces blood in the vessel than standard liquid sclerosing agents. The thicker formula allows for treatment of larger varicose veins with this minimally-invasive procedure.
At Northwest Vascular & Vein, we perform ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy on an outpatient basis, usually without any type of anesthesia. The small needles used for the procedure cause little discomfort to the patient. Ultrasound imaging is used to pinpoint the location and guide the needle directly into the vessel.
Once the needle is in place, the sclerosing agent is injected into the vessel, causing the vein walls to seal together and close the vein completely. The entire process can be viewed on the ultrasound screen, allowing both the physician and patient to see the results of the procedure. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy takes just a few minutes to complete and patients are able to return to work and other regular activities as soon as the procedure is over.
Results of ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy can be seen right away. Painful symptoms that had accompanied the varicose veins will also subside as soon as the procedure is completed. Because the affected vein is completely eliminated, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is considered a permanent way to treat diseased veins. However, additional varicose veins may develop in the area over time and require additional treatment.
